The closest literal translation of the word 'Sikh' is student.

Sikh religion is more than just a protocol to connect with God. It is a complete, well-defined, and practical philosophy to uplift and empower people to prosperity. It is also the first and only proven socio-economic-political model indigenously developed by natives of South Asia.

Sikhs are are direct descendants of the more than 3000 year old Indus Valley Civilization, one of the original four ancient civilizations: Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Chinese, and Indus Valley. Sikh religion founded in 1500's is also the youngest religion in the world. This makes it the youngest religion of one of the oldest civilization.

Today, their land is at the geopolitically critical confluence of Islamic heartlands, Hindu Hindustan (India), and China. Sikhs live where these three ideologically opposed nuclear powers meet. Yet Sikhs have excellent relations with all of them.

Sikhs history as direct descendants of an ancient civilization; geopolitical position at confluence of three large Asian powers; and curators of the first and only complete, indigenous, and proven socio-economic-political model of North-Central Asia; makes them very important players in the heart of Asia and in the Asian century.

Sikhs have distinct, well-defined and well-known:
Identity
History
Ethnicity
Culture
Language
Script
Food/Cuisine
Music, musical instruments and style
Religion, philosophy, and way of life
Socio-economic-political model and system
Institutions

They are not a sub-culture, but with distinct identity and culture. They are independent and sovereign people that are not subservient in their mindset to any other culture, religion or nation.

Sikhs are not Indians. Sikhs were never part of 'India' and belong to a different Indus Valley civilization. There was no political entity 'India' before 1947.

Punjab is the native homeland of the Sikhs.
